preservation instinct

preservation instinct
a half bleached bobcat skull propped
atop a dry cholla branch wards off
pigeons and people.cars passing must glimpse my chakra field –
so black – and stars winking out must
be softer heartsscattering for safety in shadow. i knew
a girl whose spirit animal was a field mouse
but i am much cat –patient like a prowler and prone to retract
if need be: claws, common courtesy,
my need to gnaw,my stoney and sufficient heart’s dowry,
four paws and some seven dim lives left, two
too clever eyes, plusthe chance to purr with any dignity
at all.
